The coffee cup series is a contemporary translation of the Mırra cup, which has a long and strong tradition in Mesopotamia.
Mırra takes a form with deep roots in Mesopotamian daily life and gives it a present-day expression. The series is designed by DAY Studio for the Atlas Harran Design Collection, which translates Mesopotamian knowledge and aesthetics to our times.
The cups are part of a broader collection made by hand by women in Harran, including local and Syrian refugee women, within the curatorship of Bilgen Coşkun and Dilek Öztürk, founders of in-between.online.
The Mırra cup carries a long and strong tradition across Mesopotamia, and the series offered here reads that familiar form anew. Rather than reproducing the past as a museum piece, the design gives a vessel rooted in daily life a present-day expression, keeping its proportions and its quiet ceremony intact while refining the lines for contemporary tables. It sits within a broader collection that translates Mesopotamian knowledge and aesthetics to our times, so the cup is never isolated: it belongs to a conversation about continuity, where objects people once reached for without thinking become deliberate, considered pieces again.
What gives the collection its character is the way it is made. The pieces are produced by hand by women in Harran, including local women and Syrian refugee women, an approach that ties craft to livelihood and to a sustainable design economy rather than to spectacle. Under the curatorship of Bilgen Coşkun and Dilek Öztürk, founders of in-between.online, the project brings global design discussion together with social and cultural dimensions, so that aesthetic choices and questions of work, place, and shared heritage are held in the same frame instead of being treated separately.
